Had a quick look at the book last night. I am so glad that it is more than just a dictionary - more than just a book for the suddha to look up and understand what we mean. We already have one language that is unique to this country - Sinhala. It is not spoken nor written anywhere else in the world. And now you have given Sri Lankan English too a place and validates the way we speak and write.

I'm one of Dr. Dushy Mendis' students at the University of Colombo and I was at the launch of your wonderful book. I am very happy that the idea of Sri Lankan English has got more established with the publication of your dictionary.

Wanted to say how much I am enjoying the dictionary, enlightening, amusing in parts and enriching my range of epithets nicely. Well done, a topping book! So far churufchurufying makes it to the number one spot, keep trying to work it into every conversation with parents who have young children.

After returning from a short Christmas break in the UK, I wandered into Vijitha Yapa’s the other day and came across this brilliant magnum opus of yours, the Sri Lankan English Dictionary. I must say it’s incredibly comprehensive. When I started dipping into it, nearly all my favourite words and phrases were there. The variations on BSE produced in Sri Lanka and in India, where I was as a boy have fascinated me for a long time. I used to have Hobson Jobson as my loo reading, but it’s now been replaced by your tome.

What a fascinating publication it is, you have painstakingly put it together. A labour of love indeed. The Sri Lankans are now spread world wide and they have taken the language with them and at times find it difficult to explain it, but you have come up with the answer. I for one have been looking for a clear explanation of the word ‘machang’ used by the diaspora here and you’ve come up trumps. Thank you.

Thank you for the dictionary! It arrived on Monday and is already a popular addition to our 'by the loo' library. It is a fantastic book to dip into...really fascinating and a great achievement. Well done! It oozes with your passion for the country and the language and feels like a chunk of you. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I keep my dictionary by my bedside and every so often I open a page at random, to find myself engulfed in memories, scents and feelings of the past - and also to find how much Singlish my English includes...

I haven't yet had time to absorb all the richness of the dictionary, but it's already plain that, like all the best reference works, it combines attentive scholarship with great enthusiasm for your subject. It will be a valuable and useful addition to my library.

I just wanted to say what a wonderful book your dictionary is. I have been sitting here up in the Massachusetts countryside for the last many hours reading through it, with your Introduction, and think it just a triumph. I thought you might like to know it is now shelved next to Hobson-Jobson, sandwiched between that and Cruden's Concordance.

I am writing to thank and congratulate you on the publication of the dictionary of Sri Lankan English. I enjoyed going through it (it brought much I had forgotten back!) and believe it is a timely, important and rather witty contribution to Sri Lankan literary studies. I know the dictionary will be a valuable resource for students and teachers alike and I look forward to seeing it extended and evolve over the years as interest in the field grows.
