Learning Sinhala

I have been learning Sinhala since I first came to Sri Lanka in 1985, and teaching it since 1996. I teach the beginners’ class at the British Council in Colombo – a 40-hour course designed for foreigners living in Sri Lanka who want to gain a basic, practical knowledge of spoken Sinhala. The course is followed by a second 40-hour course - “Sinhala 2” - designed for those who have completed the beginners’ course, or who already have a basic knowledge of Sinhala. Classes are held twice a week, either in the morning or the evening, over a 10-week term. Terms run from October – December, January – March, and April – June.

For more information on British Council Sinhala and Tamil courses, you can contact me if you have any questions, or visit the British Council website at:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/srilanka-learning-sinhala.htm

For those who have completed both British Council courses, or who already have an equivalent knowledge of the language, I organise Sinhala conversation classes together with a native speaker of Sinhala. These are not British Council classes, but more informal groups which generally meet once a week for 2 hours. Please contact me if you would like more information about this option.

It is also my intention to develop this website as a resource for learning Sinhala and Tamil, both to supplement the courses I teach, and as a self-access site for those who are unable to attend classes. Please revisit the website for updates on this, and contact me if you have any ideas or suggestions.
